Support International and Wilderness Medicine at WVSOM
RIM Center: Mission and Programs
Mission
The RIM Center’s mission is to promote interest in and support the recruitment of students and physicians dedicated to serving rural, underserved communities both at home and abroad. By doing so, we assist WVSOM in producing exceptional osteopathic physicians who are culturally aware and globally competent.
Wilderness Medicine
WVSOM’s commitment to serving rural populations extends beyond traditional healthcare environments. Many of these communities engage in wilderness-related occupations or recreational activities, creating unique medical challenges. The RIM Center addresses these needs through the following initiatives:
- Wilderness Medicine Club: We support this student organization by providing wilderness experiences and training that enhance medical skills relevant to rural practice.
- Wilderness Medicine Elective: This two-week elective for third- and fourth-year students, as well as residents, combines didactic lectures with hands-on workshops led by experienced practitioners.
- Continuing Medical Education (CME): In partnership with other organizations, we offer Wilderness Medicine CME and faculty development opportunities to WVSOM alumni, faculty, and community health professionals.
- Program Support: Contributions support the elective program and a variety of workshops, experiences, and opportunities in Wilderness Medicine.
International Medicine
Research shows that medical students involved in international service projects are more likely to pursue primary care specialties and practice in rural areas. The RIM Center facilitates international medical experiences through:
- Elective Rotations: We coordinate, vet, and provide logistical support for fourth-year international elective rotations in partnership with service organizations operating in 23 countries.
- Service Trips: Partnering with on-campus clubs like DOCARE and the Christian Medical and Dental Society, we arrange and support international service trips during spring and summer breaks.
- Program Support: Funding is used to purchase medical supplies and defray travel costs for students participating in international service trips.
